Manchester United Hit 22-Year Low In Game With City

Manchester United hit another all-time low during their latest embarrassing defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.

The Red Devils were humiliated by their noisy neighbours just within the first forty-five minutes. It  was a horrendous display from United, culminating in an own goal by Andrea’s Perreira following a cross from Kevin De Bruyne.

Indeed, it was United’s worst first half performance in as many as more than 22 years during the 3-1 loss to local derby rivals, Manchester City in the first leg of their Carabao Cup tie.

By the end of the first half, the Red Devils had been blown away 3-0, marking their worst ever first half result since a game against Middlesbrough in 1997.

Bernardo Silva began the onslaught just within 17 minutes of play. The Portuguese playmaker fired a curling long range effort into the top left corner of De Gea’s goal.

The Red devils tried to get the better of City on heavy counter attacks, but the Citizens doubled the lead with two swift moves.

With 33 minutes on the clock, Silva sent a ball through to Riyad Mahrez who rounded David De Gea to slot into the empty net.

The nightmares for Manchester United got even worse six minutes later with a lightning-paced counter attack which saw De Bruyne’s counter reb off the feet of Andreas Perreira and into United’s goal.

The Red Devils managed to have a better second half but the damage was already done. In fact, the goal by Marcus Rashford which should have been welcomed with a raucous roar by home fans couldn’t do more than a consolation goal.

They now face an uphill task to overturn events in the second leg of the tie to be played at the Etohad stadium.

It was an important win for Pep Guardiola after these same opponents turned them over 2-1 in their Premier League encounter.
