Mikel Obi Joins Turkish club Trabzonspor

Super Eagles Captain, John Mikel Obi has joined Turkish club, Trabzonspor as a free agent after agreeing to a two year deal with the Black Sea Storm with an option for an additional year.

The Turkish giants have also officially announced the capture of the Nigerian International on a permanent deal.

John Mikel Obi left Middlesbrough at the end of the 2018/2019 campaign on the expiration of his short term deal with the Championship club and is now set to make his debut in the Turkish top-flight.

The former Chelsea man put pen to paper signing a two-year deal that will see him play an exciting brand of football at the Medical Park Arena till 2021 with an option of an additional year.

Mikel will now team up with fellow compatriots in Ogeyi Onazi and Anthony Nwakaeme in the Trabzonspor squad under the tutelage of Unal Karaman with a huge expectation of boosting the Black Sea Storm’s midfield with vast experience resting on his shoulders.

“A two-year and an additional year agreement was signed with the free captain of the Nigerian national team, John Obi Mikel, to transfer to our club,” the Turkish club announced.

The Turkish giants are in contention for Europa league football come next season after securing a fourth place finish in the Turkish Super Lig in the 2018/2019 season.

The defensive midfielder who also plays a holding position is currently with the Super Eagles for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt and played a major role in the Super Eagles side who fell to a 2-0 loss at the hands of island nation, Madagascar on Sunday.

He forms an integral part of a midfield that already comprises of top players like the highly-rated Leicester City midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi and Etebo.

Nigeria were topped by Madagascar on the Group B standings of the AFCON competition and are now poised to lock horns with either of Cameroon or Ghana.
