Muhammad Ali Immortalized By Louisville International Airport

Louisville is set to rename its International Airport after boxing legend, Muhammad Ali in a statement revealed via Twitter.

In the post, the airport said it had arrived at a decision to name the Airport after the Louisville native only few days before he would have celebrated his birthday. Recall that the boxing legend was laid to rest on the 6th of June, 2016.

Even so, they emphasized that even though the airport was changing its name to the boxer’s it will however not change it’s three-letter location identifier, SDF. The airport would now be known as Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport.

Mayor Greg Fischer, the mayor of Louisville had this to say in response via his Twitter handle:

“Muhammad Ali belonged to the world, but he only had one hometown. Today’s decision to change @flylouisville’s name to Louisville Muhammad International Airport is a major piece of a broader effort to celebrate those deep ties.

Former US President, Barack Obama placed the boxer in the same category with civil rights activists like Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela.

The boxer was well known for his political activism. Added to that, he is regarded as the greatest boxer of all time with his finale match, a win against then world champion, George Foreman. Consequently, he is nicknamed ‘The Greatest’

The 6ft. 3in. tall boxer converted to Islam in the year 1961 and changed his name from Cassius Clay – which he regarded to his slave name – to Muhammad Ali. Consequently showing great resistance to white domination during the Civil Rights Movement.

Five years after, he refused to be drafted by the US military stating his religious beliefs and contraposition to American involvement in the Vietnam War.

As a boxer, he was very vocal against his opponents often being provocative. He often trash-talked both in and off the ring.

He will surely be remembered and immortalized in the hearts of boxing lovers.
