N400m Worth of Falsified And Expired Drugs Destroyed By NAFDAC In Nasarawa State

The National Agency for Food, Drugs, Administration and Control, NAFDAC, on Thursday, destroyed substandard, illegal and expired drugs and other related products worth at an estimate of about N400m in Lafia, Nasarawa state.

The Director-General of NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, informed the press while the destruction of the falsified and expired drugs was ongoing, in Nasarawa state, Lafia stated that the products destroyed comprise of substandard and falsified medical products.

According to the Director General of NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, represented by Mr. Abubakar Jimoh, Director of Special Duties in NAFDAC, the unwholesome processed food products, cosmetics and other counterfeit unsafe products were collected and taken by the agency from the importers and distributors in the North Central zone (Northern part) of Nigeria.

Also destroyed were drugs which were clearly expired which was handed over by some compliant companies, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), trade union,  Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) as well as the National Association of Proprietary and Patent Medicine Dealers (NAPPMED).

According to the NAFDAC reports and summation of the matter, the value of the products which were destroyed was worth in an estimate to be about N400 million which included and consisted drugs such as antibiotics, antihypertensive, anti-malarial, herbal remedies, psychoactive and controlled substances.

Others include foods which were destroyed by NAFDAC as according to the foods being expired consisted of foods such as spaghetti, vegetable oil, non-alcoholic beverages, sachet water, among others. Cosmetics products include creams, pomade and so on while chemicals consisted of fake insecticides which do not work.

A statement made by the Director-General of NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye read indicated that:

 “The destruction of these items today is a testimony of our resolve to safeguard the health of our nation. I can assure you that NAFDAC is doing everything to ensure that the right quality medicines and wholesome foods are sold to Nigerians,”
