NCDC Expands Laboratory Operation for COVID-19

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has revealed that it has expanded the number of laboratories with the capacity to test for COVID19 to 6 with the inclusion of the Virology Laboratory of University College Hospital, Ibadan.

Another lab is expected to be set up today in Abakalikiin order to increase the COVID-19 testing capacity in Nigeria.

As at the time of filing in this report, there 97 confirmed cases with Lagos being the highest and Kaduna Governor, Nasir El-Rufai’s test came out positive.

This means out of the 36 states of the federation, 11 states and the Federal Capital Territory have reported positive cases of the dreaded virus. They include Lagos (59), FCT (16) Ogun (3), Enugu (2), Ekiti (1), Oyo (7), Edo (2), Bauchi (2), Osun (2) Rivers (1) Benue (1) and Kaduna (1).

Three have been discharged and one death has been recorded.

The government agency has also launched a WhatsApp service which allows for 2-way conversations on social media. Through this means, they will send real-time messages to all Nigerians who opt into the service, and Nigerians can also engage directly with them.

In essence, it allows provides the following functions:

1. Get the latest updates on COVID-19 in Nigeria.

2. Get information on how testing is carried out.

3. Receive urgent messages from NCDC

4. Simply add the number: 07087110839 and send “Hi”
