New Minimum Wage: It’s The First Stage Of Victory for Workers – Labour Leaders

  • TUC ULC describes signing of law as a win of a first leg race.
  • They call for the implementation of the law by respective states.

The Trade Union Congress has reacted to the signing of the New Minimum Wage Bill 2019 into law by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Bobboi Kaigama of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Joe Ajaero of the United Labour Congress (ULC), who lauded the signing of the Minimum Wage Bill into law by described it as the first stage of victory for workers.

The group, which, therefore, called for strict immediate implementation of the new salary regime said the signing was the first stage of the battle to ensure a living wage for their members.

While also calling for strict implementation of the wage to ensure that all the states and the private sector comply, the Labour leaders plan to sanction any employer that refused to comply with the new minimum wage.

In an interview with The Nation, Ajaero, who said the Union is ready for the second battle having won the first leg said the level of enforcement by the states, government agencies and the private sector would be looked into.

“Experience has shown that some states, government agencies, the private sector may not want to comply. So, we have to enforce strictly on this.

“Also, the insinuation that N27,000 is what will be approved has been laid to rest. I want to use this opportunity to congratulates the Nigerian workers,” he said.

Long overdue

On his part, Kaigama said the positive development is a victory for the Nigerian workers.

Speaking further, the TUC President pointed that what is needed now is strict follow-up, noting that the minimum wage is long overdue.

While expressing happiness that the bill has been eventually signed, Kaigama said it requires strict monitoring so that every employer will comply.
