Newport County Vs Manchester City FA Cup 16 February Review

Manchester City youngster, Phil Foden struck twice to thwart Newport chances of going into the final eight of the FA cup. It took a spirited team with no room for complacency to defeat a team of lower league footballers on muddy pitch.

Newport’s boss, Michael Flynn after the match said that the greatest respect the Citizens boss paid his club was picking a Starting XI that was as strong as the one that faced Rodney Parade.

Newport County coming into the match had already defeated Premier League side, Leicester City and Middlesbrough and have shown themselves an excellent underdog especially when they played on home soil.

Recall that Guardiola before the match had already talked about the height of the club’s players. Indeed, this is what they employed; the use of aerial attacks on a pitch that was worse than most lawns in the backyard of Premier League footballers.

Tyreeq Bakinson almost got the goal just inside of fifteen minutes, but Ederson who looked like he had played on firmer beaches just tipped the ball off to make an incredible save. This chance came from a long throw-in. Long balls were definitely their tactic.

This chance was enough to wake Manchester City up and Sane almost got the goal but his shot from six yards out just clipped the crossbar and bounced over.

Sane almost got a penalty after coming down under a challenge but the referee waved it off and with the unavailability of VAR, the Citizens were soon left frustrated.

Sane was soon rewarded for his hardwork in the 51st minute racing behind the Newport defence to strike into the goal.

Foden soon after dribbled down the right flank and got the goal for Manchester City before Padraig Amond got a consolation goal for the home side.

It took only ninety seconds for Foden to respond once again as he scored his second for the night before Algerian International, Riyad Mahrez scored the fourth for the day to seal the win.

Newport County 1-4 Manchester City it ended.
