Nigeria Will Continue To Miss Akunyili – Aisha Buhari

The wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha has eulogised former Director- General, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), late Prof. Dora Akunyili.

Describing Akunyili as a very dedicated, hardworking and transparent in her service years while speaking at the 25th anniversary of NAFDAC in Abuja, Mrs Buhari said her family became interested in Akunyili during Buhari’s days at the Petroleum Trust Fund, because of her transparent, hard work and dedication to service.

While noting that the former NAFDAC DG was hardworking, transparent and dedicated to her duties and Nigeria, she added that Akunyili will be missed her valuable contributions to national development.

“My family and I actually became interested in the affairs of NAFDAC through my intimacy with late Prof. Dora Akunyili. A close relationship forged when she worked with my husband, who was the Chairman of the then Petroleum Trust Fund.

“May her soul continue to rest in peace.”

Profile of Akunyili

Late Akunyili received national and international recognition due to her significant contributions to the development of pharmaceutical industries in Nigeria after gaining recognition as a pharmacist and governmental administrator. She won several awards for her work in pharmacology, public health and human rights.

She became the Nigerian Minister of Information and Communications from 2008 to 2010.

Akunyili, who ran for election as Senator for Anambra Central for the APGA in April 2011 lost to a former governor of the sta, Chris Ngige of the then ACN.

Akunyili, whohad six children and three grandchildren died in an Indian hospital on 7 June 2014 after a battle with cancer.

Her funeral, which took place on 27 and 28 August, was attended by many dignitaries from within Nigeria and beyond, including President Goodluck Jonathan (2010 to 2015), the then Nigerian President and a former Nigerian military ruler General Yakubu Gowon.
