Nigerian Senate approves N30,000 as new minimum wage

– The Nigerian Senate has approved N30,000 has the new minimum wage 

– This comes after the NLC called for an upward increment of the minimum wage from N18,000 to N30,000

A new report from the Senate, an arm of the Nigerian Legislative Government has made it known that the House has approved a new minimum wage for workers in the country.

The report made it known that the National Minimum Wage Act CAP N61 LFN (Repeal and Re-enactment) 2019, was read for the third time before the Senate today and has been passed.

With this, the newly approved Minimum wage now stands at N30,000 as against the previous wage of N18,000.

The Ad Hoc Committee on Minimum wage presented a report today via Senator Francis Alimikhena.

A report via the Nigerian Senate Twitter handle made it known that during deliberation on the report of the committee, Senator Ahmad Lawan stated that, “The Ad-hoc Committee promised to give a new minimum wage to Nigerians and they have fulfilled the promise. This gesture should be appreciated. We do not have to wait until we are threatened with strike action before we take action. The Nigerian workers must show that the government is paying them and they are paying the government in service.”

Also in a statement via the Senate Twitter handle, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki commend the leaders of the Nigerian Labour Congress and other union bodies.

He said, “I want to commend the leaders of the organisations of the union. Let me also state that as government, we should ensure that at times like these, we should not wait for there to be strikes to do what is truly deserving for our workers.”

The upward review of the minimum wage comes after the Labour Unions threatened to go on a nationwide strike if it was not increased.
