Nigerians set to be deported as Ghana begins massive crackdown on illegal immigrants

Ghana Immigration Service has begun a massive crackdown on immigrants living illegally in their country.

According to reports, Ghana began the massive crackdown after a viral video showing immigration officials being attack by persons suspected to Nigerian nationals.

The nabbed immigrants without immigration status were accused by the GIS of being internet fraudsters.

The GIS also served a notice to landlords and property owners to eject any known illegal immigrant residing in their property.

A press statement by the Comptroller-General of Ghana Immigration Service, Kwame Asuah Takyi reads in part:

The use of such properties by persons who are illegally residing in the country make such owners liable of the offence of harboring an illegal migrant, as stipulated in Section 52(1)(b) of the Immigration Act 2000 (Act 573).

Section 52(1)(b) states that, a person who knowingly harbours any person whom he knows is to be deported or has reasonable grounds to believe has acted in contravention of this Act commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding GHS1,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or both,” the statement added.

The GIS hereby wishes to serve notice to all landlords and owners of properties that, it will be conducting vigorous checks on their premises, and are therefore being asked, to fully cooperate with officers of the GIS.
