1. Presidency Undecided about 2019 Presidential Debate

The Presidency has reacted to speculation that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo would attend the 2019 Presidential Debate of January 19 on behalf of the President.

Special Adviser to the President on Media, Femi Adesina has announced that his principal is yet to decide on whether he would take part in the debate or not.

According to him, the debate was not about eloquence but what the political parties had to offer the country if elected.

However, he said Nigerians would be informed if the president takes decision on the matter.

2. Things to know about INEC’s Amina Zakari

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC appointed Amina Zakeri as its head of Collation Center on Thursday.

Amina Bala Zakari was once the INEC’s Director of Operations.

Following the expiration of the tenure of Attahiru Jega in July 30, 2015, President Buhari appointed her Acting INEC Chairman. She was the first woman to hold the position.

3. FG Gives Contractor 2 Weeks Ultimatum on Lagos-Abeokuta Rail Project

The FG gave the contractor handling the Lagos-Ibadan rail project 2 weeks to deliver at least the Lagos-Abeokuta end of the project.

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi during his inspection of the project, said China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) needs to deliver the Lagos-Abeokuta axis of the railway project for commercial purposes in two weks.

According to him, “I want the project delivered. Though, we cannot say that CCECC isn’t trying but, for commercial purposes, they have to complete the section so that, passengers can board train to Abeokuta.”

He said that he observed that an efficient rail line was part of the solution to the congestion around Lagos sea port.

4. 4 Killed by Gunmen in Plateau

It has been reported that some youths were relaxing at a beer parlour when the gunmen opened fire on them, killing four persons in the Qata Community of Plateau State. Quata village is less than five kilometres from Jos, the state capital.

However, contrary reports had it that six persons died in the attack.

 The attack took place around 9 pm on Tuesday when the victims were celebrating making it to the New Year.

Several beer consumers exchanging pleasantries at the centre sustained gunshot injuries.

5. UNICEF Decries Fate of Children in Nigeria

The UN agency, in its report ‘How the world failed children in conflict in 2018’, said the world failed to protect children in conflict in Nigeria and 14 other countries in 2018.

UNICEF lamented the future of millions of children living in Nigeria and other countries where there is armed conflict. They said warring parties have continued to commit grave violations against children.

About northeast Nigeria, they said Boko Haram has continued to abduct girls, who are raped, forced to become their wives or sent on suicide bombing missions.

Other countries affected as listed by UNICEF are: Afghanistan, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo,  Iraq, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Myanmar, Palestine, South Sudan, Somalia, Syria, Ukraine, and Yemen.

6. Nigerian Air force Carry out Operation in Zamfara

The Nigerian Air Force, says Air Task Force, of Operation DIRAN MIKIYA scrambled two Nigerian Air Force attack helicopters, supported by an ISR platform, to engage bandits and destroy their compound.

The reports said the bandits regularly assemble at a compound around the foot of the hill before going out on operations near Doumbourou Hill in Zamfara.

Accordingly, the Nigerian Airforce reported that they successfully destroyed the armed bandits’ hideout and neutralised a large number of bandits armed with high calibre weapons.

NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola announced this in Abuja. He said the operation was carried out on Wednesday.

7. NCAA Speaks on ‘Near Crash Incident’ in PH

It was reported that Azman Airline’s Boeing 737 aircraft with registration number 5N-NAS made an emergency landing at the Port Harcourt Airport, Omagwa, after one of its double engines failed.

Adurogboye explained that the NCAA is investigating the incident in line with standards and international best practices.

The General Manager, NCAA, Mr Sam Adurogboye, confirmed the development in Lagos on Friday.

8. 13 African Countries Beat Nigeria in Forbes Business Ranking

Thirteen other African countries have beaten Nigeria to be ranked higher in Forbes Magazine’s Best Country for Business ranking for 2019.

Nigeria emerged as the 110th Best Country for Business, below South Africa, ranked 59, Morocco (62), Seychelles (66), Tunisia (82), Botswana (83), Rwanda (90), Kenya (93), Ghana (94), Egypt (95), Namibia (96), Senegal (100), Zambia (103) and Cape Verde (104).

9. Man kills Mother in Nsukka, Enugu

A 73-year-old woman, Mrs Cecilia Attah, has been killed by her son at Nru, in Nsukka LGA of Enugu State.

A senior police officer, who confirmed the incident, said that her death was accidental. The police said that she was trying to separate two of her sons, who were fighting, when one of them hit her with a plank.

It was gathered that shortly after killing his mother, the suspect ran to the nearby Nsukka Police Station to report that his brother was trying to kill him.

10. Okorocha Praises Aisha for His Wife’s Appointment

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, yesterday, thanked Aisha, wife of the President for appointing his own wife, Nneoma Okorocha as Southeast Coordinator for the Youth and Women campaign team.

He said he was delighted by such an appointment from the wife of the President.

He added that his wife would campaign extensively to ensure that victory was achieved for President Buhari in the elections.

11. Group Cries Out Over N2000 Monthly HIV Drugs Fee

The Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWHAN) has cried out to the government to make Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) completely free and accessible.

The Lagos State Coordinator of the group, Peter Obialor made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.

He added that his members were made to pay N2, 000 monthly to access the drugs.
