Omeruo Puts Nigeria Through To AFCON 2019 KnockOut Round

Kenneth Omeruo scored in the second forty-five minutes to put Super Eagles of Nigeria through against Guinea Bissau and obtain the first ticket into 2019 Africa Cup of Nations last 16.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria started on the front foot with an intimidating front three of Ahmed Musa, Odion Ighalo and Moses Simon but it was centre-back Kenneth Omeruo who got the only goal of the encounter, moving quickest to head the ball home from a Moses Simon corner kick.

With the win, Nigeria have earned a place in the competition’s round of 16 having comfortably won their first two games.

Nigeria took the game by the scruff of it’s neck, controlling the play and dictating the pace but Guinea chose to stay back, absorb the pressure and score on the counter or so they thought.

However, they were pegged back in their own half with only a few chances to show for it.

On the other hand, Nigeria made some fine attacking runs with notable misses from Odion Ighalo.

Just inside 10 minutes, Ighalo latched onto a cross from the left flank only to be disappointed by his first touch which gave the ball away to Guinea’s pack of bullish defenders.

Few minutes away from half-time, Ighalo marayded forward having latched on to a perfect through pass but opted to score rather than pass to an on rushing Ahmed Musa who could have easily slotted the ball into the the back of the net. Huge chance missed!

The Super Eagles came into the second half with an even greater sense of urgency with defensive midfielder, Ndidi often drifting to the right to make crosses but the ball flew across the goal on most occasions begging for some contact.

They were however soon rewarded for all their efforts when Omeruo who had been impressive for most parts of the game scored a stunning header to give the Super Eagles a well deserved win.
