Porto Send Roma Packing Out The UEFA Champions League

Alex Telles scored a penalty in extra time to help Porto overturn a goal deficit from the first leg and go on to the last eight of the competition at Roma’s expense.

In a competition that’s looking like a compilation of comeback stories, the Portuguese Champions oversaw a turnaround of the tie just like Manchester United had done against PSG on the same night and Ajax against Real Madrid the night before.

Porto had to fight back from a 2-1 defeat in the first leg and went all out to attack right from the start. They soon got rewarded for all their hardwork in the 26th-minute when Moussa Marega released Tiquinho to tap in from close range.

That in itself was enough for Porto to progress to the quarter-finals stage of the competition but Roma put an abrupt end to their day-dreaming 11 minutes later when Diego Perotti who was brought down by Eder Militao and De Rossi in the box took the spot kick after stuttering run-up and converted, sending Iker Casillas the wrong way in the process.

De Rossi later came off at the stroke of half-time with a muscle injury with Lorenzo Pellegrini coming in for the veteran.

Porto ended the first forty-five minutes on top and resumed the second half with the same spirit. Marega who was provider for the first goal, provided the second for Porto having collected the ball from a Jesus Corona’s cross.

Roma had several chances to equalize but they didn’t quite make the mark with Dzeko missing two glorious chances. Speaking for the Italians, they did have a penalty appeal waved off in the stoppage time of extra time but VAR couldn’t come to their rescue as it adjudged that Marega had not fouled Patrick Schick.

Prior to that, Porto got their third of the night via a penalty awarded by VAR review three minutes from the end of extra time.

Porto 3-1 Roma it ended.

Porto 4-3 Roma (aggregate score)
