Presidency Reacts to Onnoghen’s ‘Resignation’

– Adesina says he is unsure if Buhari is aware of Onnoghen’s resignation

– He says what’s on the table of the presidential team to Jordan is his presentation tomorrow.

Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, says he is yet to confirm if the President is aware of the reported resignation of suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen.

Adesina, who stated this in an interview with Channels Television’s Seun Okinbaloye on Politics Today on Friday noted that he like many other Nigerians read of the development online, but there has not been any confirmation from the National Judicial Council (NJC) or other relevant bodies on the development.

“Is the President aware, I can’t say yet,” Adesina said.

Also confirming a report he read online on Justice Onnoghen’s lawyer confirming that he has turned in his resignation, the presidential spokesman, who noted that he met with his principal earlier today but Onnoghen’s resignation did not come up as a topic for discussion.

Speaking on the report submitted to the president by the NJC, which reportedly recommended compulsory retirement for Justice Onnoghen, Adesina, who said it was in the papers that the recommendations had been sent, pointed that it is the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami that will be in the best place to give confirmation.

“It is a judicial matter, and the Attorney General is the legal officer of the country, he will be privy to it,” he explained.

Reiterating that he is yet to be briefed by the president regarding any development from the Onnoghen’s reported resignation, Adesina said what was discussed by his team to Jordan was his presentation at the World Economic Forum tomorrow as he is yet to get a briefing from the president on Onnoghen.
