Roma Vs Porto UCL 12 February Review

Porto were punished by two goals from teenage sensation Nicolo Zaniolo as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to Roma at the Stadio Olympico. The defeat is the first this season for the Portuguese giants and a goal from Adrian Lopez in the 79th minute was not enough to pick points away from home.

Roma had the better of the first half with the hosts dictating the pace of the game and Porto goalkeeper, Iker Casillas denying Alexandr Kolarov a goal and Lorenzo Pellegrini the rebound.

In the 38th-minute it was Edin Dzeko who looked likely to score first when he marauded through Porto’s defence only to blast off the post.

After the break, the hosts brought the game to the visitors, stepping up the pressure even more with Zaniolo releasing Bryan Cristante but Casillas was on hand to make a brilliant save.

Casillas who had a busy day at the office saved the visitors once again after parrying a low ball from Pellegrini.

The visitors finally gave in to the pressure when El Shaarawy sent an inch-perfect cross to Zaniolo who finished it off finally with the clock reading 70 minutes.

Zaniolo soon got his second when Dzeko’s shot bounced off the post with the former getting the rebound to score his fifth goal of the season since his arrival from Inter Milan in the summer. He must be a wonder kid! But definitely not the time to draw comparisons with Rashford and Mbappe you’d like to think

Minutes later, Lopez pulled one back for Porto as he smashed the ball into the bottom corner of Roma’s goal while Hector Herrera failed to get the equalizer for the Portuguese giants. Worthy of note is that Lopez’s goal was approved only after a VAR consultation – the very first in the competition.

Roma held on to a 2-1 victory, their first over Porto in the competition.
