Sani, Amosun, and Other Political Stalwarts Loses As APC Submits Candidates List To INEC

It was shocking to many political observers as the National Electoral Commission made good on its resolve to not shift the deadline for the submission of political parties’ list of contestants for the presidential and national assembly elections slated for the first quarter of the following year.

There was a mad rush at the International Conference Center (ICC) by political parties as they tried to beat the deadline fixed by the electoral body last night.

According to reliable sources, about 84 parties were able to meet up with the deadline. However, this was not a rosy moment for the All Progressive Congress (APC). The party was already plagued by large-scale disputes on the not-so-transparent primaries conducted.

According to the National Publicity Secretary of APC, Mr. Lanre Isa-Onilu, the party was able to field candidates for all the states including Zamfara which faced some initial hindrance with INEC based on the shady primaries conducted in the state.

However, political stalwarts like the Ogun State Governor, Mr. Ibikunle Amosun were at the receiving end of the stick, since their wishes were not totally granted. Although Amosun got the senatorial ticket, his preferred governorship candidate lost out to Chief Dapo Abiodun. APC’s appeal committee discarded the petition against Chief Dapo Abiodun.

According to reliable sources, Senator Shehu Sani’s name was not on the list submitted by APC to the electoral body last night. Even though the appeal committee upheld Sani’s nomination as the preferred senatorial candidate for his constituency his name wasn’t submitted.

In Plateau state, Mrs. Pauline Tallen, the former deputy governor and minister, lost her bid to pick up a senatorial ticket. In Rivers state, the appeal committee also discarded a petition against the emergence of Mr. Tonye Cole as the APC gubernatorial candidate in Rivers state.

This means Senator Magnus Abe will have to wait for the next election before he can achieve his ambition of governing the state.
