Sterling Receives Award For Fight Against Racism In Football

Raheem Sterling has become just the second recipient of the Integrity and Impact Award founded by Dow Jones Sports Intelligence after Rachael Denhollander who received the accolade in 2018.
The England winger was handed the award in recognition of his social activism against racism issues.

Raheem Sterling has this season on different occasions spoken out against racism and other issues plaguing football, highlighting the racist abuse he himself suffered in last month’s Euro 2020 qualifying match against Montengero where England emerged winners.

He also suggested points deduction for clubs and home matches behind closed doors for clubs who defaulted emphasizing that a club fine wasn’t enough to discourage the barbaric act.

The 24-yr-old forward toes in the footsteps of Rachael Denhollander who was the first survivor to speak against Larry Nassar, a disgraced USA gymnastics doctor.

The English star was handed the award at the BT Sports Industry Awards held in London by England gaffer, Gareth Southgate.

The Manchester City forward in his speech laid to rest talks that the Citizens winning the title ahead of Liverpool was doing anyone a favour.

He said:

“Any slip and you’ve got the Liverpool guys that can go on top and you don’t want, I don’t want that and I don’t think anybody wants that!”, earning some cheers and jeers from the audience in the process.

Despite Sterling notching a total of 17 goals this season, it is Liverpool defender, Virgil Van Dijk who is in pole position to be crowned the PFA Players’ Player of the Year for the 2018/2019 campaign.

If Manchester City go on to win their last three remaining games, they would be the first Premier League side to retain the Premier League title in the last decade with 98 points, only two short of their 100 points mark made last season.
