Super Falcons Pip Their Ivorian Counterparts To WAFU Cup Title

The Super Falcons of Nigeria rallied late to finish off their hosts and Ivorian counterparts on penalties to become 2019 WAFU Women’s Cup Champions.

Thomas Dennerby’s ladies defeated Cote d’Ivoire 5-4 on penalties after they had played a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

The Super Falcons got to the final on the back of a semifinal win over 2018 WAFU winners, Ghana via a penalty shoot-out on Thursday.

The Ivorians dominated proceedings and dictated the pace of the game in the opening minutes of the encounter but failed to break the deadlock untilĀ Ange Koko Nguessan took the game by the scruff of the neck and got the first goal through a stunning free kick.

The Dame Elephants held on to their lead with some dogged defending in hopes of lifting the title on home soil but an equalizer by Uchenna Kanu in the closing stages of the encounter put their celebrations on hold.

They were gutted by that goal and went in search for another bur couldn’t find one.

Both teams struggled to snatch a winner but the stalemate forced both teams to a penalty shoot-out.

The Super Falcons converted all their chances from the spot but the hosts were denied by a missed shot to crown the Super Falcons winners of the cup.

Kanu, a member of the Nigerian team also picked up an award in the shape of the golden boot after scoring 10 goals in only five games for her team – an average of two goals per game.

The Nigerian team will now switch focus to the Women’s world cup to be played in France next month.

But for now, they could go wild and celebrate with their fans on the streets.
