There are several kinds of degree awarding institutions in Nigeria. From Universities to polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education, this list is quite broad. Polytechnics place second on this ranking, coming just right behind the Universities.

Usually the average Nigerian youth opts for the polytechnic when universities refuses to grant them admission. Polytechnics are for technical education, so those who are interested in having careers as some form of technologists or technicians should consider this. But the truth is that Nigeria is not an industrialized nation, so your technical education may not do you much good.

If you still want to attend a polytechnic, here are the best ten in Nigeria. The polytechnics where judged by to what extent they have fulfilled the guidelines set by NBTE (Nigeria Board of Tertiary Education) standard. Yaba College of Technology

This institution was established in 1947, in pre-colonial Nigeria. It is situated in Yaba area of Lagos. Moreover, as with anything that has to do with Lagos (at least when compared with other states) Yabatech is an excellent institution. In my opinion, it is better than many Nigerian Universities. The school offers courses in various fields of learning, from arts to engineering and commerce related course. In total 34 courses are offered at Yabatech. If you intend to get into a university through direct entry, then Yabatech is a place for you.  Yabatech students are considered ahead of many other schools for direct entry. It is a Federal Polytechnic located in Northern part of Nigeria. Kadpoly was amongst the polytechnics that was mapped out to being upgraded to a university. But what happened, I can’t tell. Kadpoly is an old institution, and they have churned out some of the best technologists in Nigeria, especially in textile technology. There was a time when the textile industry in Nigeria was booming. But now the story is very different. Irrespective of what is happening in the north, Kadpoly embraces diversity, that is in tribe. I once met some of their students at a conference and there was a healthy mix of southern and northern tribes.
