Enugu state in south-east Nigeria was created in 1991. Prior to becoming a state, it was a part of the old Anambra state. Enugu state is one of the smallest states in Nigeria and is occupied predominantly by people form the Igbo tribe. Just like other states in southeast Nigeria, Enugu has just one tribe; the Igbo tribe.

Igbo Tribe

The Igbo tribe in Enugu is the only tribe in the state. They occupy a land that is considered very prestigious to the Igbo people. The Igbos speak the very popular Igbo language. There are a handful of the Igbo dialects in Enugu state. The most popular are Nssukka and Enugu-Ezike. The Igbo people of Enugu are known for their very energetic dance steps. They also have lots of festivals that include exhibitions by various kind of masquerades. Although masquerade exhibitions by the Igbos are part of the culture, modern day Christian Igbos are against such tradition.

The Igbos are traders and farmers, they are known to produce yam in very large quantity. They are also predominantly Christians.

    In Enugu State, there are Igala speaking people in Ogurugu Iga in Uzu Uwani LGA of the State. Igala and Idoma are spoken languages in part of Igbo Eze North LGA of Enugu State.
