Trippier Charged For Allegedly Violating Betting Regulations

Atletico Madrid defender, Kierian Trippier has been charged for an alleged breach of betting rules. The former Spurs man has been complying with investigations so far. He insists that he has never placed a bet or profited from gambling throughout his professional footballing career.

The 29-year-old was charged for breaching betting rules by the English FA.

The full-back is assumed to have committed the offence sometime last week, around the period when he made a switch to Atletico Madrid from North London outfit, Tottenham. The deal was worth £20m at the time.

The rule broken by the defender instructs players not to participate in betting activities or advice others on matters about “football anywhere in the world, including… the transfer of players, employment of managers, team selection or disciplinary matters”.

He is also thought to have breached a law pertaining to lending out information  “position within the game and which is not publicly available at that time”, position then used for betting.

A statement from the English FA read :

“Kieran Trippier has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of the FA’s Betting Rules, specifically in relation to Rule E8(1)(a)(ii) and Rule E8(1)(b), during the period of July 2019.

“He has until 18 May 2020 to provide a response.”

Trippier released a statement denying all allegations levelled against him.  His statement read:

“I have fully complied with the FA’s investigation over the past several months on a voluntary basis and will continue to do so,” the 29-year-old said.

“I want to make it clear that while a professional footballer, I have at no stage placed any football-related bets or received any financial benefit from others betting.”

Last year, Trippier’s countryman, Daniel Sturridge was fined £75,000 for a similar offence.
