Universities in Nigeria That Accept NECO

The very first step to be taken when seeking admission into the university is to get your 0′ levels ready. Without having your O’level result ready, there really will be no need to apply to a university in Nigeria. There are four O’level results that students can pick from when seeking admission into a Nigerian university. They are WAEC, NECO, GCE and NAPTEB.

Of these four, WAEC and NECO are most commonly used.

Although WAEC and NECO serve the same purpose in Nigeria, not every Nigerian university welcomes applicants with NECO results. It is therefore important to be aware of the Nigerian universities that accept NECO results when making the choice of the university to apply for. Some of those universities are listed below

Obafemi Awolowo University

Obafemi Awolowo University is located in the ancient city of Ile-Ife, Osun state. It is owned by the federal government of Nigeria. Obafemi Awolowo University also known as great life was established in 1961, lectures however did not start that year. Lectures at Obafemi Awolowo University commenced in 1962. When Obafemi Awolowo University started, the school had just eight faculties which has been increased to 13 faculties.

Students seeking admission into Obafemi Awolowo University can present their NECO results or a mixture of WAEC and NECO results.

University of Ibadan

Located in the city of Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria, The University of Ibadan was established in 1948. It is the oldest university in Nigeria. Presently, the University of Ibadan has 10 faculties, they are the faculty of Arts, Public Health, Agriculture, Forestry, Dentistry, Vertinary Medicine, Law, Dentistry, Technology, Arts and Science, Pharmacy and the college of medicine.

The University of Ibadan accepts applicants with WAEC and NECO results.

University of Nigeria Nsukka

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka is the most prestigious university in southeastern Nigeria. It was established in 1955 by Nnamdi Azikiwe, and commenced fully in 1960. The University of Nigeria, Nsukka has four campuses. They are university of Nigeria Enugu campus, University of Nigeria Nsukka campus, University of Nigeria Aba campus and Ituku-Ozalla campus.

The University of Nigeria Nsukka is Nigeria’s first fully autonomous university and accepts applicants with only NECO results or a mixture of WAEC and NECO.

University of Uyo

This was formerly known as the University of Cross River state (unicross), at the moment, Uniuyo has 13 faculties. It is located in Uyo, the capital city of Akwaibom. It was named University of Uyo and changed to a federal university in 1991.

This university accepts applicants with NECO results.

University of Abuja

The University of Abuja was founded in 1988, it is located in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria. The matriculation of students into the University of Abuja began in 1990, two years after its establishment. The university of Abuja has 12 faculties, they are Faculty of Law, Faculty of Social Science, Faculty if Science, Faculty of Management Science, faculty of Vertinary medicine, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Engineering and College of Health Sciences. The University of Abuja accepts applicants with only NECO results.

University of Benin

The University of Benin is was established in 1978. Prior to becoming a university, it was an institute of technology. This university is open to both undergraduate, post graduate and diploma students. The University of Benin is an almamata of many successful Nigerians in different fields. Some of them are Richard Mofe Damijo, Babatude Raji Fashola and Emmanuel Uduaghan.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka

With a population of 24,700 students, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka is one of the oldest universities in south eastern Nigeria. Named after the late Nnamdi Azikiwe, This former state university is one of the few universities in southeastern Nigeria that offers a variety of courses. It currently has three campuses, one in Awka and the other in Nnewi and the third at Agulu.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University accepts applicants that have NECO results.

University of Jos

The University of Jos is an offshoot of a satellite campus affiliated with the University of Ibadan. It is a federal university and was established in November, 1971. The University of Jos has a population of 14,000 students.

Some of the courses offered in the University of Jos include in Agriculture, Medicine, Social Sciences, Dentistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Engineering.

Michael Opara University, Umudike

With its alumni nicknamed Umudykes, Mouau is a fast growing university in southeastern Nigeria. Michael Opara university is a federal government university located in Umudike, Abia state. It should not be mistaken for Michael Opara college if agriculture.

It is a fast rising school that was established in November, 1992.Although Michael Opara University Umudike was established in 1992, the admission of students formally began in 1993 with 82 students admitted for the 1993/94 academic session.

Kaduna State University

As compared to a whole lot of public universities in Nigeria, Kaduna state university is relatively new. It was established in 2004, and is one of Nigeria’s fastest growing universities. It is also highly rated by the National University Commissions.

With 7 faculties and 39 courses available, Kaduna state university gives applicants the option if a wide variety of courses. Kaduna state university has two campuses, they are located in Kaduna and Kafanchan.

Tai Solarin University

Located in Ijebu ode, Ogun state, Tai Solarin University of education us Nigeria’s first university of education. It was named after Tai Solarin, Nigeria’s human right activist and educational administrator.

Prior to becoming Tai Solarin university, it was known as Tai Solarin college if education. It was made a university in 2005. This happened under the administration of Governor Gbenga Daniels, then governor of Ogun state.

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria

Located in Zaria, Kaduna state, Ahmadu Bello University is one if Nigeria’s most prestigious universities. It is a federal government university and was founded in 1962. ABU, Zaria has two campuses. They are Samaru and Kongo.

This university is named after the first premier of northern Nigeria, Alhaji Sir Ahmadu Bello.

With adequate knowledge of the Nigerian universities that accept NECO, making a choice of the university to apply for based of your O’level result will be much easier. This will also help you avoid unnecessary error when filling your jamb form.

    What about UNILAG?? It is not stated if they accept NECO result or not. It is popularly asserted that they accept NECO result. I don’t know how true that is.
