AfDB To Assist Nigeria’s Diversification Efforts
The African Development Bank is to help Nigeria with $1 billion. This was made known by the Bank’s president Dr. Akinwumi Adesina while on a visit to the Vice-President in the Presidential Villa. He also added that the AfDB will add an additional $4.1 billion to support Nigeria in other areas like power, agriculture, infrastructure development and private sector business expansion.
Oil Prices Fall
Crude oil prices fell further after an OPEC meeting in Algeria when hopes to limit production from oil producing nations faded. Based on analysts the discussions were made difficult due to increased production from Russia and Saudi Arabia and a potential increase by Nigeria and Libya.
Clinton And Trump Square At Debate
Democratic Presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton and Republican Presidential candidate, Donald Trump met for the first presidential debate since after the primaries that saw both as flag bearers. They traded words over race, terrorism, jobs, Trump’s tax issues and Hillary’s emails. This lasted for about 90 minutes.
Tinubu Asks For Oyegun Resignation
The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Ahmed Bola Tinubu has asked for the resignation of the party’s national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun in what he described as unprogressive handling of the Ondo state gubernatorial election primaries. This he made known in a statement issued by his media office where he said the party is being suffocated by anti-democratic forces pretending to be progressive.
Edo Election: Obaseki Wins It
The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared Mr. Godwin Obaseki of the All Progressives Congress as the winner of the gubernatorial elections held on Wednesday 28th September, 2016. After the collation of results from 18 local government areas, Obaseki polled a total of 319,483 votes while his contender of the Peoples Democratic Party, Osagie Ize-Iyamu polled 253,173 votes. Meanwhile the PDP candidate rejected the election results before the announcement by INEC.
Jirbin Suspended By House Of Rep.
The former chairman of the Appropriation Committee, Mr. Abdulmunmin Jibrin has been suspended by the House of Representatives for 180 days. This was due to what the house call the breaching of practices and precedents of the House. He is also expected to tender an apology to the House before his date of resumption. He has also been barred from positions of authority till the end of the 8th Assembly. Since the House sits for 3 days in a week, he is expected to be away for about 60 weeks.
Iheanacho, Iwobi For Golden Boy Award
Nigerian Internationals Kelechi Iheanacho and Alex Iwobi have been nominated for the Golden Boy Award. Iheanacho recently became the first Nigeria to score at Manchester Derby and also has 10 goals to his name in the 2015/2016 season and for the 2016/2017 season he has 3 goals already. Iwobi on the other hand joined Arsenal first team last season, scored two goals and has also become a regular face in the team. The Golden Boy Award is for the best player under the age of 21 in European nation’s top division.
Funke Akindele Makes Appearance With Husband
Actress Funke Akindele aka Jenifa has made an appearance with her husband Abdul Rasheed Bello aka JJC skills during the premiere of ‘A Trip to Jamaica’ movie in Lagos, Nigeria. It is a movie by comedian Ayo Makun aka AY. The movie was a mixture between Nollywood, Hollywood and Ghallywood and featured Funke Akindele, Nse Ikpe Etim, Chris Attoh, Dan Davids, Eric Roberts, Rebecca Sylvera, Paul Campbell and AY among others.
Gender Equality Bill Passes Second Reading
We can remember that an initial bill was struck out at the Senate by some male lawmakers who were opposed to its content. Just this week, a modified version of the bill has passed second reading in the floor of the Senate. This bill in particular seeks to remove all discrimination against women. The bill was on Thursday sponsored by a member of the Senate from Ekiti state, Senator Biodun Olujimi.
Sale Of Assets: Senate Opposes
There has been uproar and reactions about the Federal Government’s plans to sell off some of Nigeria’s assets as a way of bringing us out of the present economic recession. Meanwhile the Nigerian senate at the beginning of this week’s seating passed a recommendation opposing this move by the Federal Government. They also went on to pass a recommendation asking for the amendment o section 162 of the constitution to give the executive a legal backing to save money for times of economic downturn.
