Why FG cannot give Approval for Creation of State Police – Sen. Shehu Sanni
– Sen. Shehu Sanni has disclosed that the President or the Federal Government cannot just give approval for the creation of State Police
Earlier Today there were reports alleging that Pres. Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government has given approval for the creation of State Police.
However, the Presidency in a latest statement has come out to deny the report, it stated that Pres. Buhari only received a report on the reformation of the Special Anti-Robbery Squard SARS and requested that a white paper be submitted.

Below is an extract of the statement released by the Presidency, it read,
STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE PRESIDENT BUHARI HAS NOT APPROVED STATE/LG POLICE – PRESIDENCY
Pres. Muhammadu Buhari Monday received a report on the reform of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The President requested that the report be studied & a white paper produced within 3 months.
President Buhari’s specific directive is that a three-man panel be set up to produce the white paper.
The report of the white paper committee will form the basis of the decisions of the government on the many recommendations, including the setting up of state and local government police made by the Ojukwu panel.
Until a white paper is produced, it will be premature and pre-emptive to suggest that the recommendations contained in the report have been approved by the President in part or whole.
However, Sen. Shehu Sanni in a statement has disclosed why the President or the Federal Government cannot just give approval for the creation of state or local police.
The lawmaker disclosed that before such approval can be made there must be a constitutional amendment.
Sen. Shehu Sanni said, “State or Local Government Police cannot be created or just be approved by the Federal Government or the President without a constitutional amendment.”
