Why JAMB Suspended NIN for 2020 UTME – NIMC

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has said that its collaboration with the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) is in alignment with Government policy on leveraging authenticated National Identity Number (NIN) for service.

This is coming on the heel of suspension of NIN as a prerequisite for the registration if the 2020 Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) which begins on Monday, January 13, 2020.

The NIMC in a statement titled : Philosophy: why before what; eliminate fraud and exam malpractices, said the process aims to show the commitment of Government in providing proof of legal identity in the form of unique digital ID to enable access to service, rights and protections amongst others.

Philosophy: why, before what; eliminate fraud and exam malpractices.

1. The main thrust and commitment of Government is to provide proof of legal identity in the form of unique digital ID to enable access to service, rights and protections etc.

2. Any good foundational ID systems must have linkages with functional ID systems; hence our collaboration and partnerships with public and private sector organisation including JAMB.

3. Our collaboration with JAMB is in alignment with Government policy on leveraging authenticated NIN for service provision.

4. The upsurge and demand for NIN within the limited centres and facilities has caused a review and rethink for us to consider a shift in the commencement of the date of use of NIN as a prerequisite for JAMB exam registration.

This is to give more time to intending applicants to obtain NIN, roll out more registration centres and equipment nationwide under the digital identity ecosystem and provide identity authentication services anytime anywhere.

5. We appeal to the general public to ensure that they register to obtain their NIN within this timeline to avoid any future enforcement drive.

Thank you
