Wolves vs Liverpool – Post match report

Wolves have shown Liverpool the exit out of the FA Cup in what was a thrilling match. It was however as we had predicted. Two goals from Raul Jimenez and Ruben Neves ensured a win for Nuno Espirito Santos’s side. On the other hand, it was Divock Origi who pulled one back but it wasn’t enough to get the Reds through onto the next round. iDONSABI takes you through the details of the fixture.

First Half

Liverpool started the match on the front foot with their dominating style of play, pulling the strings and making the calls. However, tragedy struck when Dejan Lovren sustained an injury inside of six minutes. Liverpool’s plans had gone pear-shaped. The Croatian International limped off and was replaced by a 16year old.

Wolves then took advantage in the 11th minute when Otto struck towards the post. The ball was however just wide off the post after being deflected off Alberto Moreno. Only few chances came after this as the teams played back and forth football.

Albeit, only few chances were made, Liverpool had a half chance but Xherdan Shaqiri shot just wide. Instead, it was Wolves who found the back of the net first. It was Jota this time. He pounced on a ball which Milner had failed to clear. There was however still a lot to do. He made his way past Fabinho and sent an inch-perfect pass to Raul Jimenez who swept the ball in. Wolves were set to rewrite the record books and get the win.

Second Half

Klopp was clearly frustrated in the first half but would trust that his half-time talk had some impact. It was soon to be. Divock Origi had scored. He converted a half chance after Milner had won the ball and he made no mistake about it. 1-1 read the scoreboard. It was definitely going down to the wire.

Wolves however took the game by the scruff of the neck. Parity lasted only four minutes. Neves had done the unthinkable. He had just scored a screamer from 25 yard out. This was an upset. It’s back to square one for the Reds.

Shaqiri gave a glimmer of hope when his swirling free kick looked like it had found his way in. However, John Ruddy was the Savior after flicking it onto the post.

Klopp immediately sent on Firmino and Salah to salvage a draw. However, the deed had already been done. The record books have been re-written and it was Wolves who had placed Liverpool in the doldrums.

2-1 it ended in favour of Wolves.
