Zamfara Gov’t Lauds FG Over Ban on Mining

The Zamfara State Government has lauded the Federal Government for banning mining activities in the state in a bid to nip in the bud insecurity facing the state.

The Governor of the state, Abdulaziz Yari, who gave the commendation on Sunday in Talata-Mafara after a meeting with security chiefs in the state said the state government welcomed the policy by the Federal Government, describing it as good for the people of Zamfara.

While noting that Zamfara as host of these miners has not been benefiting from the miners, said mining activities must be suspended because most of them are doing activities close to bandits’ camps and nothing is affecting them.

“Therefore miners must be suspended because of these reasons. So we welcome this decision and we are going to support it,’’ he said.

Yari, therefore, appealed to communities in the state to cooperate with security agencies, adding that the state government is doing its best to ensure their success.

While also commending the Federal Government for deploying security agencies to the state, he said it is hoped that the move will end banditry in the state.

“We have started seeing positive results due to measures put in place and we hope these will be sustained,’’ the governor said.

The Federal Government had ordered all the foreign miners to leave the state, and All mining activities were also suspended in Zamfara State to vacate the state within 48 hours from April 7, 2019.

The Acting Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, in a statement reiterated that all foreign miners who violate the order would have their licences withdrawn immediately.

This was in reaction to an attack that led to the death of about 50 persons in the state.
