Asamoah Gyan Makes U-Turn On Retirement Decison On Request From Ghana President

Asamoah Gyan has rescinded his decision to retire from representing Ghana’s National Team after what he described as a plea from Ghana President, Nana Addo. This is coming only 48 hours after the Black Stars captain had revealed he was quitting International football.

In a press statement released via the Asamoah Gyan foundation, the Ghanaian said he had a chat with Ghana President who asked him to make a U-turn on his decision to retire permanently from representing the Black Stars of Ghana.

He reiterated his belief in the Ghanaian national team and stressed that he was bought the idea of a return because of his strong desire to help Ghana win the prestigious AFCON cup which have eluded them for a little over 30 years now.

Gyan said he treats the request of Ghana president, Nana Addo with utmost respect and will therefore make himself available for selection by coach, Kwasi Appiah.

Gyan who has spent 16 years playing for the National side only 48 hours ago announced via his verified Twitter handle that he was retiring from the National Team because he wasn’t happy with the goings in the side.

The statement which was titled: “Decision to recuse myself from AFCON 2019, Egypt and retire from the national team”

Excerpts from his statement read:

“I cannot pretend to be happy. I would rather hurt myself emotionally and psychologically, over the years I served with an open heart and have given my all to the best of my ability in my quest to serving our great nation, Ghana.

Gyan stressed how much devotion he had pledged to the Ghanaian National team citing the 2014 world cup as an example and highlighting how he supported the team financially when there was need to, he then concluded by saying he was retiring from the National side if the coach was going to name another captain despite his being in the squad.

“Upon consultation with my family and team, and as an active footballer and captain of the national team, if the decision of the coach is to give captaincy of the tournament to another player while I am named in the team of the tournament.

“I wish to recuse myself from the tournament. I also wish to retire from the national team permanently; not pretending my presence would not fuel the purported undermining the country has seen under my captaincy.”
