Technology is considered to be the bedrock of development. This statement alone tells you that a nation cannot develop fast and efficiently without those skilled in technology. These people are of the engineering family and include technicians, technologists and engineers.
Therefore, I guess we now know one of the reasons for our nation’s underdevelopment. And at whose feet do we lay this blame? If we want our education to improve, laws should be enacted that would see the children of public office holders school in Nigeria. So this ranking was done by the Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN). COREN is the body concerned with the regulation of all engineering related matters.
Top Ten Universities to study Engineering in Nigeria
Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA)
The Federal University of Technology is concerned with research and development amongst other things. The mission of FUTA is “to promote technological advancement by providing conducive learning environment for research, teaching, and learning that engenders development of products that are technologically oriented, self reliant and relevant to the society”.
Some of the courses studied in the faculty of engineering include Mechanical engineering, Electrical Electronic engineering, Civil Engineering , Minning Engineering amongst others. COREN has rated FUTA as the best school for engineering in Nigeria.
Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO)
Established in 1980, this is the only Federal university of Technology is the South East and South South, and also one of the first in Africa. FUTO was the first University in West Africa to start a department of polymer and textile engineering. Now there are such departments or there equivalents in UNIZIK and UNIBEN.
The university is reputed for having very rigorous and stressful academic work. Although most of the students don’t like it, they do well in the industry because they have already being prepared for the stress of real life. For this, reasons and more FUTO Alumni make up one of the largest percentages of work force in the oil and gas sector.
FUTO is a technology based school and it school of Engineering is its pride. Its school of engineering is called SEET (School of Engineering and Engineering Technoloy), which comprises of 9 departments studying various disciplines of engineering. The school is relatively unknown in the south west, but in the South East and South South, it is a weight puller. In recent times FUTO has achieved a much needed balance of academic and extra-curricular activities. Unlike before, when activities here were more inclined to the academic and everyone was GP conscious.
University of Ilorin (UNIILORIN)
Uniilorin although not very popular, is a school loved by a lot of students and parents alike. This is because there are no unnecessary delays. The school doesn’t go on strike, therefore students graduate on time. University of Ilorin is located in Kwara state, the same state Bukola Saraki, the Senate President is from. It is the third best school in Nigeria to study engineering.
University of Lagos (UNILAG)
Unilag is more popular for its extracurricular activities, and amongst its Alumnis are very influential people in the country. This I think is because of the location of the school. University of Lagos in a federal government school, situated at Akoka Lagos, it was established in 1962. This was to take off some of the pressures on the then only university in the south west, University of Ibadan. UNILAG is excellent in many fields of studies. And there is stiff competition getting into this school, because of the population of the state.
Federal University of Technology Minna (FUTMINNA)
There are actually two federal universities of technology in the north, and this one is the better of the two. FUTMINNA was established in 1983, it is a university involved in Biotechnology and Genetic research. It actually has probably the best, facilities amongst other Federal universities of technology in Nigeria. The school has two campuses and both are fitted with very good sporting facilities. If you don’t mind going to Niger state, FUTMINNA is a nice place to be, and it is also one of the easiest institutions on our list to get admitted into.
Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)
The Great Ife, doesn’t need much introduction, it is regarded as one of the most prestigious universities in Nigeria. And it is very popular amongst south westerners. OAU is located in the ancient city of Ile-Ife in Osun state. It was started by the leaders of old western Nigeria, as a form of augmentation for University of Ibadan. Its name was changed in the 70s to honour Obafemi Awolowo.
University of Benin (UNIBEN)
Formerly known as Bendel state University, James Ibori and other great men attended this institution. Some of the course in faculty of engineering include Petroleum engineering, Mechanical engineering, structural engineering, Electrical and Electronics engineering.
Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH)
Top engineering courses at LAUTECH include Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Agricultural Engineering and Chemical Engineering. This is a school of technology, situated in Ogbomosho, Oyo state, it is owned by the Oyo state government.
Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU)
Founded in 1982 as Ogun State University, but changed to Olabisi Onabanjo University in 2001. Its school of engineering is one of the best in the country.
University of Nigeria Nssuka (UNN)
UNN was founded in 1955, and as at then was the only University in the then eastern region. UNN ranks number 10 on COREN’s rankings of best universities for engineering in Nigeria.
Truth be told educational system in Nigeria is still subpar when compared to several others in the world. Remember what they say, a one eyed man is the land of the blind is king. So here you have them, the ten kings in the land the blind. This will change, but as long as Nigerian universities are concerned, the focus is too much on theory than practice.
