Maiduguri Rocked By Mutiple Explosions On Election Day

More than one explosion was heard in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital in Northeast Nigeria on the morning of Saturday, February 23.

iDONSABI gathers that the explosions which rocked Maiduguri on Saturday morning began at exactly 5:52 am, were reportedly more than eight in the state.

The explosions heard in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, were known to have occurred around Molai, Dambo’a road, Bulumkutu and Njimtilo road axis.

According to reports, it was recorded that gunfire and explosions were also heard from other parts of Maiduguri metropolis in Borno state.

However, the latest report has it that Nigerian troops have reportedly restored calm to the area. According to one Ahmad Salkida, a journalist known to have the information about this incident, to a large extent, on the workings of the different factions Boko Haram in Nigeria’s northeast.

Salkida said in a statement:

 “The situation seems to have been contained by the Nigerian troops. Hopefully people will be assured to go out and cast their votes.”

Meanwhile, this tragic incident in Maiduguri is coming on a day Nigerians are heading to the polls to elect a new president and their representatives at the National Assembly on Saturday, February 23rd.

Prior to today, the Nigerian government had earlier promised that security apparatus has been put in place to ensure the safety of the electorate.

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday, February 22, had addressed the nation as the people await the D-Day on Saturday, February 23, 2019.

President Buhari’s statement read:

“Do not be afraid of rumours of violence and unrest. Our security agencies have worked diligently to ensure that adequate security measures are in place. “You will be able to vote in an atmosphere of openness and peace, devoid of fear from threat or intimidation.”
