2019 Poll Shows That Elecotrates Now know The Power They Have – Oyegun

Formal National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun, has said the military cannot truncate democracy again in the country.

Oyegun, a former governor of Edo State also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sign into law the Electoral Reform Bill to deepen the nation’s democracy.

Speaking in Abuja, the APC stalwart who admitted that mistakes were being made by civilians in government, argued that those were not enough reasons for the military to contemplate truncating Nigeria’s democracy again.

While noting that the fight was against incessant military intervention in Nigerian politics and the struggles of all those involved including those who gave their lives, brought us where we are today, he said he foresees no situation where the military, under any circumstances, will come back to power.

Speaking on the outcome of the 2019 general elections, Oyegun said Nigerians showed that they had understood that power actually belonged to them.

He further noted that the electorates displayed their voting conscience as it was seen in some states where people voted for President Muhammadu Buhari and at the same time voted against incumbent governors even though they are from the same political party.

Oyegun who stated that the electorates have started appreciating the power they have which was well displayed noted that people are becoming more sensitive to the happening around them.

“So, the voting public is a lot more sensible and sensitive today and they have started to realise that, ‘yes, we are the employers of all politicians – whether you are President, whether you are governor or whether you are local government chairman,” he added.

He also urged the president to sign the electoral act as he now has the time to effect it.
