Supreme Court Declares Donald Duke SDP Presidential Candidate One Month After The Presidential Elections

Over one month since the conclusion of the presidential elections in Nigeria, the Supreme Court in Nigeria has declared Donald Duke, former Governor of Cross River State, as the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Meanwhile, while at the October 6, 2018 primary elections of the of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Donald Duke had polled 812 votes to defeat his close colleague identified as Professor Jerry Gana who polled 611.

Furthermore, Professor Jerry Gana who was defeated by Donald Duke during the SDP primaries went to court to seek Duke’s disqualification, a request which was duly granted by the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja in December.

However, the Appeal Court upturned the decision in January of 2019; and earlier today, March 29th, the Supreme Court, justices Ejembi Eko, Kudirat Kekere, Amiru Sanusi, Paul Galumje and Uwani Aji upheld it.

In addition, the Supreme court also awarded N3 million in favour of Donald Duke.

It is important to note that while the Donald Duke and Jerry Gana tussle went on, the National Executive Council (NEC) of the SDP adopted President Muhammadu Buhari as its presidential candidate in the February polls.

Nigerians have come out to slam the decision to announce Donald Duke as its SDP candidate because it is coming very late since the Presidential elections have been concluded long ago.
