Xenophobia: FG Warns Nigerian To Avoid Travelling to Volatile Areas in South Africa
- FG lauds South African Police over arrests made so far and calls for timely prosecution.
- Reiterates commitment to ensuring protection of lives and properties.
The federal government has warned Nigerians to desist from traveling to volatile and high-risk areas in South Africa, pending the time the xenophobic issue is addressed.
This was stated by Ferdinand Nwonye, spokesperson of the ministry of foreign affairs, in a statement.
‘The Federal Government of Nigeria initially condemns the renewed attacks on foreign nationals and their businesses in South Africa which has led to the loss of lives and properties worth millions of Naira.

“The FG is engaging the relevant South African authorities via the Nigeria GHigh Commission in Pretoria, Consulate General in Johannesburg and Ministery of Foreign Affairs to ensure that definite measures are put in place to curtail the unfortunate attacks.’
While commending the South African Police for the arrest recorded so far, he urged them to persecute the perpetrators in order to serve as deterrence to others.
“The Federal Government commends the arrest of perpetrators of the dastardly act by the SA Police and call on timely prosecution to serve as a deterrent to others.
“However, due to the tension created by the attacks, the FG wishes to advise Nigerians to avoid traveling to high risk and volatile areas until the situation is brought under control.”
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also assured the general public that the Government is committed to protection of lives and properties of Nigerian Nationwide.
